bachelor + master music, graduating option music theory and notation
In concert halls and elevators, supermarkets and restaurants; from symphony to ringtone, live or on CD, over the internet, on the radio or on an iPod … Music, in all its forms and more than ever before, is everywhere nowadays. The choice for the music theory and notation programme is one for becoming part of a long tradition of theoretical reflection on the phenomenon of music in a world that is changing ever more rapidly.
For the development of the indispensable skills of a music theorist we offer you a wide and balanced range of courses that matches theory to a personal artistic practice.
A music theorist is an expert in the general theory of music and must master solfeggio and ear training like no other, as these are the foundations for any classical musician, instrumentalist, composer or conductor. The traditional forms of writing (harmony, counterpoint, fugue), which remain points of reference for the further development of many creative musicians, also reveal their secrets in this programme. Jazz harmony is of course another integral part of the programme.
Complete mastery of accompaniment – where theoretical knowledge and practical ability meet – and keyboard and vocalization skills are equally indispensable competencies for choir conductors. The introduction to composition course is the ideal place to apply your theoretical knowledge in a personal and creative way. In software application classes you have the opportunity to refine your command of different programmes (music notation etc.).
In addition to this profound and specific music training we offer a wide range of courses that provide an extensive general knowledge of the phenomenon of music. This knowledge enables the music theorist to make valuable contributions to the debate concerning the place music has in our society. Combined with a thorough study of score analysis, you gain a detailed insight in musical history from the Middle Ages up to the most recent styles. Furthermore, our programme offers methods to adequately conduct and present music-theoretical research.
Basic competencies required to be able to grow in this programme are a thorough preliminary training in music and keyboard proficiency.
This comprehensive programme creates many opportunities in the professional field. As a teacher and lecturer in notation and theory, you can pass your acquired knowledge and passion on to young people and adults. But various cultural institutions such as concert promoters, publishing houses, music ensembles and orchestras will also appreciate your skills for theoretical and logistic support.
